The Face of Hunger

Sunny Sarasota County - we project such a beautiful image! The gorgeous weather, the glistening beaches, and the laid-back lifestyle. However, there is also a face less well known and that is the face of hunger.

Food insecurity occurs in every county in America, and that includes right here in Sarasota County.

The impact of being hungry has dramatic effects on how one functions. Children are unable to learn if the only thing they hear is their stomach rumbling. It can also affect a child’s health and behavior. Adults cannot stay healthy and/or be productive in the workplace when dealing with hunger.

Meet ALICE

We serve the ALICE population — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. We all know ALICE people, they educate our children, keep us healthy, and make our quality of life possible, yet do not earn enough to support their own families. ALICE households are forced to make tough choices such as deciding between quality childcare, paying the rent, medical bills, or even buying groceries, which have long-term consequences not only for ALICE, but for all.

Here are some facts from Feeding America about poverty and hunger. Even in the world’s greatest food-producing nation, increasing numbers of children and adults face poverty and hunger.

• In 2019, 34 million people including 11 million children, lived in poverty here in America. For a family of four, that means earning just $25,000 per year.

• 2020, 50 million people including 17 million children, were food insecure.

Ending hunger is the first step in empowering our communities. If you need food, we invite you to attend our Client Choice Food Distributions. These bi-monthly distributions are made possible by our partners at All Faiths Food Bank and the USDA.
